Equally Wet POW
In this POW we had to find where to place a sprinkler in order for it to be an equal distance from three flowers so that they each get an equal amount of water. I’m going to assume that the sprinkler has a full 360 degree radius and doesn’t leak water out anywhere, make puddles or spray any extra water. At first I thought that the sprinkler could be placed right in the middle of the triangle, however it appears that the flowers are placed in an isosceles pattern. This means that the flowers are not placed at an equal distance from each other and the sprinkler has to be placed closer towards the flower that is placed further out. In order to find the exact place that the sprinkler would go, I traced a perfect circle around the triangle to represent the minimum distance the water should reach and then placed a point right in the middle of the circle. The middle point of the circle is where the sprinkler should be placed in order for all three of the flowers to get the same amount of water. This POW wasn’t particularly hard but I still had some help from Mady who recommended that I try the circle technique. Once I realized how simple it was I finished the POW in less than a day. I was basically just a little preview of what we were doing in class.
I liked the idea of an independent research project however it was completely directionless and had no criteria or even a rubric that I knew of so it was really difficult to compete. I really didn’t like that there was no clear outlines for what we had to produce for this project and that everything we did get was very last minute. I would have a more organized schedule and more specific criteria. While researching I learned a lot about the Fibonacci sequence. For example, I learned that Fibonacci discovered the sequence while watching rabbits breed and multiply.
I didn’t really set goals for myself this year because I figured I would forget about them and not achieve them anyways. I do not feel more confident in my math abilities since all we did was work in a text book which does not help me at all in anyway. I had a hard time balance this class with my other classes because I had work in other classes that I understood and knew I could do so I focused on that instead. I don’t feel prepared for math 4 at all. I think I am probably going to struggle a lot in that class. I barely learned anything this year. The class was too faced paced, we were getting too many assignments, the teacher did not listen and did not seem to care about the class, and I had a ton of other things to do. I have to take consumer math again because they lied to me and told me I could make up my missing math credit if I took it once.
Small World Unit
POW 1 was the most enjoyable POW for me because I was able to be creative with it and have fun and while I didn’t explain a lot about the math, I did do quite a bit of math before I wrote the POW. POW 4 was interesting to think about even though I didn’t get the right answer, I really though out a lot of different ways to do this POW and I talked with different people about it.
I had a goal not to fall behind in class which I did not achieve because I started to not turn things in even though I should have. Even though I kinda gave up, this semester went ok. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever done in school and it wasn’t the worst. It was mostly in the middle. It’s only been a couple months so I don’t really feel like I’ve changed much. I don’t really know what I want to accomplish next semester.
